Tailwind v4 silently broke class-based dark mode toggles: the tested next-themes setup for Next.js App Router. As of 2026-08-08. Tested on Next.js 16.3.0 (App Router, production build), Tailwind CSS 4.3.3, next-themes 0.4.6, React 19.2.x. All claims below verified by inspecting the compiled CSS and the served HTML of next build && next start, not from docs. Tailwind v4 removed darkMode: 'class' (there is no tailwind.config.js key anymore; v4 is CSS-first).
